Why does Pfizer support the Medical and Academic Partnerships program?

Pfizer’s Medical and Academic Partnerships program funds fellowships and visiting professorships, in various therapeutic and non-therapeutic areas, to improve public health.

Is US citizenship required to apply for a Pfizer Fellowship or Visiting Professorship?
An applicant for a Pfizer Fellowship or Visiting Professorship must be a US citizen or foreign national with US permanent resident status. If you are not a US citizen, you must provide a copy of your green card with your application. Visiting scientists on J visas are NOT eligible.

Can an exception be made for certain applicants regarding award eligibility criteria?
The eligibility requirements—academic, scientific, etc—are designed and maintained by the academic advisory board specific to the field in which the grant is made. These criteria have been carefully designed to attract appropriate candidates at a certain level in their professional development. In keeping with the purpose and intention of the Pfizer grants, applicants must meet all the criteria to be considered for the award. Submissions outside these parameters will not be considered.

Can I apply if I have not yet received my green card?
You must be in receipt of your green card and have submitted proof at the time of application submission.

How do I know if my appointment at my institution is consistent with eligibility guidelines for the Fellowship in Health Disparities?
To be eligible to apply for a Pfizer Fellowship in Health Disparities you must have a postdoctoral fellowship appointment at the time of the award (July 2010). This appointment must not be tenure track.

What may the Pfizer Fellowship funds be used for?
The Pfizer Fellowship is intended to be the grantee’s primary salary support, equivalent to the usual and customary salaries of individuals in comparable positions at the institution. The grant may also be used to cover incidental laboratory supplies and expenses and travel expenses to scientific meetings. Fellowship funds may not be used for indirect costs and fringe benefits with the exception of health insurance premiums.

Who is eligible for nomination as a Visiting Professor?
An expert that fits the needs of the host department/division and institution should be chosen.

Is there a list of Visiting Professors from which to choose?
There is no list; the visitor is chosen by the host institution, based upon individual requirements. You may want to look at previous recipients for ideas. Pfizer in no way provides suggestions as to who the host institution should choose or what the content of the visit should address.

Can I apply for a Visiting Professorship the year after my program is awarded?
Awarded departments/divisions are not permitted to apply for the same award the next year after receiving said grant. However, they are permitted to submit for the same award category again one year after being awarded.

We would like to have 2 Visiting Professors for our program, is this acceptable?
Yes, the program allows the institution to select 2 Visiting Professors.

Are there scheduling criteria for the Pfizer Visiting Professorship program?
The Pfizer Visiting Professorship must be scheduled between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011, but the specific dates are determined by the host and visitor applying for the award. Dates may be changed after the application is submitted; please notify Pfizer of any date changes.

Can we receive CME credit for Pfizer Visiting Professorships?
No, all CME funding must go through our centralized Medical Education Grant (MEG) portal. MAP funds can no longer be used to fund CME activities.

Is my application complete?
An online checklist will indicate which parts of your application are complete or incomplete. The system will not allow the application to be submitted unless all sections are completed. As the deadline approaches, the program coordinator will contact you if items are missing from your application or in some way incorrect.

Has my application been received?
Once you have completed your application and submitted it online, a message will be sent stating that your application is complete and has been received. You should also receive a confirmation e-mail.

How and when will I find out if I received a grant?
After the Academic selection committee deliberations, recipients will be notified by the MAP program coordinator by phone and email. All 2010 MAP award recipients will be informed by April 30, 2010.

Who chooses award recipients?
Independent advisory boards choose the award recipients, based on the objective criteria for each program. Pfizer does not influence this process.

What if my institution is represented by an advisory board member that is sitting on the same therapeutic board that will be reviewing my grant? Am I still eligible to apply?
Yes. All board members will be recused from reviewing any applications that could potentially involve conflicts of interest. Those board members will also leave the room during deliberations involving said applications.

Will I receive a copy of the board’s evaluation of my grant proposal?
Application feedback is provided at the discretion of the Academic selection committee Chairman.

What is the penalty if more than 1 application is received from the same department/division?
The department/division head will be contacted and it will be up to that individual to choose which applicant to put forth for consideration.

Can the same grant application be submitted for consideration to more than one therapeutic category? (eg, diabetes and endocrinology)
A grant application should only be submitted to one therapeutic category. Multiple applications of the same grant will not be considered.

If I am currently in a grant-funded fellowship program, am I eligible to apply for a Pfizer Fellowship?
No. The Pfizer Fellowship is designed to provide funding for fellows who are not receiving funds through other grants.

What may the Pfizer Visiting Professorship funds be used for?
Pfizer Visiting Professorship funds are intended for honorarium, travel, catering and miscellaneous expenses directly associated with the event. Funds may not be used for indirect costs.

Are health care professionals and institutions from the states of Massachusetts and Vermont eligible for an award?
Due to new state regulations, health care professionals and institutions from the states of Massachusetts and Vermont are not eligible for MAP awards.
